How to solve financial problems in marriage?

While marriage should be about love, companionship, loyalty and commitment, there is no denying the fact that money can make a huge impact on the relationship of the couple. Nowadays, it's very common to see couples going through a divorce because of financial issues. Here are tips for you to get through money problems in marriage.
  1. No matter what the occasion is, whether it's your anniversary, a birthday or a special night out, it is important for the two of you to agree on certain terms. This is referring to the amount of money that the two of you will spend on the occasion itself or on the presents. This may seem like a small issue but if the spending habit of your partner bothers you but you always let it pass, it will soon grow and it may cause more trouble in the future.
  2. Losing your job or getting demoted is also a common problem for most couples. Not only that, these problems can also affect the self esteem of your partner, their confidence and they may become emotionally unstable to the point where it affects every aspect in your marriage. As a couple, create a backup plan in case these problems come up. Be clear of the adjustments that you have to make on your lifestyle.
  3. Of course, the opposite – getting promoted, a salary increase etc. As a married couple, you both have to make decisions on what to make of the money. Your partner may want to save it in a bank while the other may push on investing it on something. Again, talk things through and decide you'll handle the money.
  4. The idea of having children can also affect your relationship and your finances. Having a baby can be very expensive because you have to consider the medical bills, your baby's needs such as diapers and milk and their education when they grow up. Should this issue come up, you have to be keen on budgeting your money the most. You have to able to pay all of your bills and provide your child's needs both at the same time. It's not something impossible to do but it does require wise decisions, discipline and tons of money management.

  5. Recreation expenses. Everyone needs this which is why it is normal to play sports, go shopping or eat out every now and then. But if you are both tight on your budget, decide on what the two of you can afford and on the items you can spend on.
  6. Now for the big purchases such as houses, cars, properties etc. The two of you should not only discuss the practical and financial details but also the emotional repercussions that it can bring. Large purchases can affect your commitment to one another because financial issues are inevitable along the way. Both parties should agree on what's to be purchased and make sure you both take your time in talking about it.
  7. Family expenses. It is common for couples to experience either side of the family asking for financial help. Usually, the other party is okay with helping out their partner's family but it may bring issues up sooner or later.
  8. Banks accounts, credit usage and monthly payments should also be discussed. Married couples often apply for an account jointly and of course, both parties' actions may affect the credit score or rating of the other. What you can do is monitor your finances regularly by ordering a copy of your credit report from the three credit agencies such as Equifax, Trans Union and Experian.
Communication is the key in order to make marriage work. Both parties should be open to one other from the very beginning to be able to tackle any issues as soon as possible should there be any. Let these tips help you and your partner get through financial problems easily.
